A WINE OF QUALITY, CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY.

The Caley Cabernet & Shiraz

The Caley is the result of an unwavering commitment to the classic blend of Cabernet Shiraz known as the Great Australian Red. For more than a century, Cabernet Shiraz has been a focus at Yalumba and The Caley the finest example, a Super Claret” of another era.

Take a Grand Tour Back in Time

The Grand Tour was an educational rite of passage for European 21 year olds from the late 1600s to the 1800 – especially writers, poets and artists. Young men and women (accompanied by chaperones) set off for the classical cities of France, Italy, Greece and the Middle East with their leather cases, hat boxes, suits, gloves, parasols and Venetian lace fans.

Samuel Smith’s grandson Fred Caley Smith was one such adventurous soul. Born in the Barossa in 1864 he was a horticulturist and a global journeyman who set off in 1893 for a grand scientific tour that would take him around the world in 635 days: from the USA, Canada, England and Europe to the Middle East, India and Sri Lanka. Fred didn’t just return with memories: like the Grand Tourists of the 18th and 19th century such as Byron and Shelley, Fred brought back to the tiny village of Angaston a worldliness that would shrink the globe for those who would come after him.

“The beauty of Cabernet Shiraz is that by and large you can’t compare it to anything, it is absolutely quintessentially Australian.”
