The Menzies, our sole Coonawarra vineyard, is in the heart of the Coonawarra terra rossa country. As with all of Coonawarra, the vineyard site is reasonably level. The defining terroir difference between the vineyards comes from the soils; our soil is red sandy loam over limestone which is classic full bodied red dirt! The Retreat wines are usually made from blocks that were first planted in 1994 and 1995.The harvested fruit was transported to our Angaston winery for vinification. Fermentation occurred in small static fermenters where the fermenting juice was pumped over the skins to control colour and phenolic extraction and the wine was matured in older French oak.
There is a strong fruit presence of berries, black currant and pastille early in the palate giving way to nuances of chocolate and oak. The tannin is evident, though well balanced, with lingering fruit notes.
