From Yalumba come two new Shiraz wines – a new Shiraz to join the Oxford Landing series of wines, together with the latest vintage release of Yalumba Barossa Shiraz 2000, which has been enhanced by an added splash of Viognier.

Given Oxford Landing’s reputation as a quality producer of vibrant and characteristically Australian wines, it is only natural that a Shiraz wine be added to the series.  This new Shiraz from the 2001 vintage joins Oxford Landing’s already successful family of wines, which includes two whites and two reds (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz blend).  A proportion of the grapes for this new Oxford Landing red comes from some of the oldest low-yielding blocks of Shiraz grown at the estate, including 40-year-old Shiraz vines that were grown on a wide T-trellis.

The Oxford Landing Shiraz 2001 is an intense crimson red in colour and has an aroma of red cherries, cloves and a subtle oak influence.  Flavours of ripe red berries and stewed plums on the palate are met with mocha chocolate characters and a mid-palate sweetness. Like all Oxford Landing wines, this Shiraz offers outstanding value at $7.95 (RRP).

The Yalumba Barossa series of wines pay homage to the region that has been this family owned wine company’s home since 1849 – the Barossa.  Shiraz is undoubtedly a Barossa speciality, and the Yalumba Barossa Shiraz is a fine representation of what this region can offer – rich, full-bodied wines with intensity of fruit flavour.

The new release of Yalumba Barossa Shiraz 2000 (RRP $16.95) has an exotic twist with the addition of 5% Viognier – a rare and seductive grape variety, which, like Shiraz, originates from the Rhône in France.  Yalumba’s own take on this Côte Rôtie style is made from Shiraz grapes grown on 30-50 year old vines, which has imparted flavours of plums, dark cherries, vanilla and spice.  The Viognier component has added a sweet floral lift on the nose and has contributed to the wine’s wonderful rich mouthfeel and silky texture.

Both the Oxford Landing Shiraz 2001 and Yalumba Barossa Shiraz 2000 are widely available at fine wine stores.
