The Yalumba Wine Company is delighted to announce the opening of a new wine centre and retreat in the famed South Australian wine region of Coonawarra.
To be known as ‘The Menzies Wine Room and Vineyard’, the centre is much more than just a cellar door sales area. Sited at the heart of the Yalumba Menzies Vineyard - hence its name – The Menzies has been years in the planning and is the product of combined ideas and maturity of concepts.
The rammed earth building sits amidst a sea of vines on the terra rossa soil that is the very essence of Coonawarra. Surrounding it is an extensive native vegetation area where Yalumba have spent the past six years working to rehabilitate and rejuvenate the remnant native trees and grasses of the region. More than 600 saplings have already been planted and further plantings are anticipated on a yearly basis. The aim is to create a mosaic of micro-environments which may become habitats to a range of wildlife, and to show visitors to the area examples of botanical species typical to the south-east.
The Wine Room and retreat were designed by Stephen Herbert of Herbert Chapman Architects of Mt Gambier in South Australia. Stephen is a member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects which is working closely with the Greenhouse Office on energy conservation in buildings.
Materials used in the construction of the buildings include classic rural forms such as timber, rammed earth and galvanised iron specifically chosen to enhance, rather than dominate, the natural landscape. Design features include natural ventilation and energy efficiency. The Wine Room features a tasting area in which visitors will be able to taste a small list of current and back vintage fine Coonawarra wines from Yalumba, including the well-known estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘The Menzies’. Still to be incorporated are a rotating series of exhibitions and interpretive displays showing aspects of Yalumba’s environmental programme.
"We see the project as an opportunity to add environmental and conservation value to the landscape," said Yalumba Proprietor, Robert Hill Smith.
"It is an excellent opportunity to develop and create environmental citizenship and encourage an appreciation of the natural landscape. We also hope to go some way towards dispelling the myth that the protection of native vegetation and its inherent ecology is incompatible with development. The Menzies Wine Room is very much a work in progress and we expect it will be a never-ending work in progress. There’s no denying that today we’re all more aware of our impact on the environment and, in short, this project will reflect these changing values within the community."
