Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier 2005 tucks the Trophy for Best White Wine under its screw-cap at the 2006 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show (again!)
Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier is, as Louisa Rose explains, our "Essence of Viognier. We want this wine to show all the purity that is the Viognier variety. Apricots, white peaches and a touch of spice with a long and luscious palate."
Success continued through the Yalumba range of 'alternative' varieties with accolades awarded to:
Yalumba Hand Picked Tempranillo Grenache Viognier 2005 – TOP GOLD
Yalumba 'The Virgilius' Eden Valley Viognier 2004 – GOLD
Yalumba Y Series Sangiovese Rosé 2006 – TOP of class SILVER
"The AAVWS is a great opportunity for judges to focus on the less common varieties in Australia and not be swamped with vast numbers of Chardonnay, Shiraz etc. We are great fans of this competition, and have often done well, particularly with the Eden Valley Viognier (our "essence of Viognier") which has won Best White Wine of Show 2002, 2003, 2005 and now again in 2006." Louisa Rose, Chief Winemaker Yalumba.
In 1980, Yalumba planted 1.2 hectares of Viognier in the Barossa. The Viognier grew quietly for 10 years, allowing the vines time to form regular cropping patterns and giving Yalumba a 'breaking-in' period to experiment with the variety. Today, Yalumba has the largest mature Viognier resource in Australia and a series of unique white wines along side the Eden Valley Viognier – Yalumba’s pre-eminent white wine 'The Virgilius' Eden Valley Viognier 2004, Y Series Viognier 2006, and the botrytis influenced Late Harvest Viognier 2005. Yalumba have also ‘splashed’ a tad of Viognier with a range of red varietals to produce the Y Series Shiraz Viognier 2005, Barossa Shiraz Viognier 2004, Hand Picked Shiraz + Viognier 2004 and the Hand Picked Tempranillo Grenache Viognier 2005.
