Yalumba Rare and Fine

May 1st, 2006 marks the release of Yalumba's new vintage Rare & Fine wines around Australia, and then the world. Put simply, these wines are the best of the best from Australia's oldest family owned winery.

The 2002 vintage conditions in the Barossa and Eden Valleys were considered "exemplary" and the wines will continue to uphold their deservedly high reputation.

Over the next three months, Yalumba will be hosting launch events around Australia, with Jane Ferrari hosting.

Yalumba The Signature

This special wine is named to honour an employee or person who has made a significant contribution to the traditions and culture of Yalumba. Over the years 'The Signature' has honoured long serving employees of Yalumba, Hill Smith family members and friends of the business.

Since the 1990 vintage, 'The Signature' wines have won five TOP 100s, four trophies and 45 gold medals.

The 2002 vintage is dedicated to Rhonda Sexton, Key Account Sales Manager in the Victorian branch office. "I have been incredibly lucky. I have been a Yalumba salesperson since 1985 and I cannot imagine working for anyone else. I love Yalumba..."

"The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz The Signature is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Shiraz that spent 20 months in a combination of French and American hogsheads as well as smaller barrels. Its deep, sweet perfume of blackberries, camphor, damp earth, vanilla, licorice, and pepper is followed by a powerful, flavourful, intense wine revealing high tannins as well as impressive concentration. This superb Cabernet should easily age for 12-15 years.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz The Signature reveals more purple in its colour along with a cooler climate mouthfeel, massive, concentrated blackberry and cassis fruit, and additional floral and cherry notes. Full-bodied and rich, with good freshness as well as huge concentration and length, it should drink well for 15-20 years."

Yalumba is a world leader in this enchanting variety. Yalumba The Virgilius, our finest viognier, is one of Australia's most distinguished white wines and is at the pinnacle of Yalumba's white stable.

'The Virgilius' has earned this reputation by remaining true to its luscious style, year after year. A distinctive wine which exhibits wonderful apricot and stone fruit flavours and persistent palate texture.

Grapes for 'The Virgilius' are hand picked from mature vines with exceptional varietal fruit flavour and character.

Yalumba The Menzies

Since its inaugural vintage in 1987, Yalumba The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has continued to grow in stature and quality. The result is one of the finest expressions of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grapes for 'The Menzies' are drawn from nine individual subplots within the vineyard, with the core original plantings dating back to 1975. These low yielding vines consistently produce grapes with strong colour and intense flavours. Each batch is separately fermented in small lots to maximise complexity and blending options.

Quality is the key to 'The Menzies' - a combination of environmental compatibility, craftsmanship and desire to showcase regional character - highlighting Yalumba's dedication and commitment to excellence.

Yalumba The Octavius

Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz is made from a selection of aged Shiraz vineyards scattered across the Barossa. Most were planted as bush vines between the turn of the century and WWII, the oldest vineyard planted in 1901.

The wine combines the perfumed and pure fruit aromas of Eden Valley and the concentration, texture and ripeness of Barossa Valley Shiraz. The best parcels of Shiraz from these vineyards are selected each vintage for the final blend of 'The Octavius'.

Yalumba The Octavius has been classified by Langton's for the first time, ranked as 'Outstanding'.

"A spectacular effort, the 2002 Shiraz The Octavius (100% old vine Shiraz aged 22 months in both French and American wood) is a noteworthy successor to the phenomenal 2001 released last year.

Aromas of figs, chocolate, blackberry and cassis liqueur, roasted meats, and barbecue spice emerge from this hugely extracted, full-bodied monster. Reminiscent of some Grange Hermitage cuvees from the early seventies, it is a wine of supreme quality, with a singular personality as well as 20-25 years of aging potential. This stunning Shiraz is one of the greatest wines made in South Australia."
