Yalumba pioneered the growing and making of Viognier in Australia and today they are considered by many to be world leaders of this alluring variety. In 1980, Yalumba planted the first commercial vines in Eden Valley and since then have had over 20 years of viticultural and winemaking experience working with Viognier.
On 1 July 2004, Yalumba released another Viognier in Australia - Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2004. "Already sold in the USA, UK and New Zealand, its release in Australia strengthens our commitment to Viognier", says Winemaker Louisa Rose. "We now make three straight varietal Viogniers - Yalumba Y Series, Yalumba Eden Valley and Yalumba The Virgilius - plus two Shiraz + Viogniers - Yalumba Barossa and Yalumba Hand Picked".
Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2004 is a pale gold with green hues. The aroma offers intense white flowers and honeysuckle, with hints of apricot nectar. The palate is rich and very long and ripe, with citrus and tropical fruit flavours. This wine exhibits the typical Viognier texture - silky, rich and luscious. Great drinking now, and with careful cellaring this wine will continue to exhibit the generous Viognier flavours and textures.
